Discipline: Dead for ICC?

The answer is no, absolutely not. If there is one thing that irritates me, it’s gross misinformation about priests being spread as fact. Recently, I heard a fellow priest claim that discipline priests received hidden nerfs in patch 3.3 and are now ineffective in ICC. According to this priest, his penance did not hit as hard as it did pre-3.3 and his shields were not adsorbing as much. Additionally, after respeccing holy, he claimed that he was getting Empowered Renew crits for 24k with around 3000 spellpower (My main spec is holy and this can’t possibly be true either). Said priest then proclaimed that Discipline was dead.

I call shenanigans.

Ok, ok. In all fairness, I don’t think this priest was intentionally trying to feed misinformation. For some reason or other, he really thought this was true. Well, I’m here to tell you it isn’t. After hearing this, I went on a webhunt to see if any other disc priests were having trouble post 3.3. i checked PlusHeal and the Elitist Jerks Priest forums. If there was a disc nerf, disc priests in those two venues would be in an uproar. Nothing. Nada. What I did find, was this lovely gem on how bubble spam makes Deathbringer Saurfang worlds easier.

I took it a step further and decided to test it out myself by changing my off-spec back to Discipline. Guess what? All my heals were hitting for what they should be, given my level of spellpower. If there had been any kind of nerf, I certainly didn’t see it. What’s more, this past weekend I healed ICC-10 in my discipline spec and put out more effective healing than (including the bubble absorbs) our holy priest. This isn’t a flame on the holy priest, but just an observation that disc healing is certainly alive and well!

Yeah. The sad part is that this person was the GM of my former guild. I ended up /gquitting and I have to say this whole encounter figured into my decision. I just don’t think I can take someone seroiously as a GM (priest too!) that spouts this kind of stuff without researching first. Now there’s a whole guild on my server that thinks Disc is broken.

It didn’t help that said individual used mods to heal instead of doing it for himself. He also made this observation on a run of forge of souls. 75% healing reduction curse anyone?

Before coming to that realization my thought was his mod that he used to cast all his spells got all the ranks goofed up. He had some sort of mod that does mouse over function instead of relying on macros.

Anyway when he was preaching. I lawled.

Yeah, that would be my guess too. I would have suggested that he check to make sure his mod was configured right (not choosing the wrong rank) but he was just so matter-of-fact that Disc was dead that I decided it wasn’t worth the effort to try and convince him otherwise.
